The subject of the exhibition POLYSTYRENE OUROBOROS, which first took place last year in Prague’s Galerie Makráč, is the cooperation between Macromolecular Chemistry Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the artist Jan Mladovský. The result is an installation focused on one of the most common polymers, polystyrene. This macromolecular substance was chosen as the material for the realisation of this installation because of its thermoplastic properties, and the ability to shrink a miniaturised image rendered on its surface, in this which case a graphical representation of its own molecules. At the same time polystyrene, like many other plastics, is an interesting and controversial topic, especially from the environmental perspective in a globalised world. Dr Zbyňek Pientka from the Macromolecular Chemistry Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in his lecture will acquaint his audience with his research and answer questions on plastics, including their influence on the environment.
The installation of transparent miniatures suspended in the breeze and moving walkways hanging high under the arch of the nave uses perfect lighting conditions, which here are due to a combination of windows penetrating the light grey areas and the baroque interior building elements. A video display showing in a loop the repeated process of forming of the transparent plates is suspended from the elevated walkway. It is thus analogous to the miniatures suspended above. This invites the viewer to enter the nave of the church, where they will have a chance to walk across the bridge and watch the crystalline glittering thumbnails along its length.
