David Železný is known not only as a gallery owner but also as the curator of several exhibitions that arose as part of previous years of Smetana’s Creative Litomyšl. Being a gallery owner and collector is not simple. Art cannot be sold without passion and enthusiasm for pictures or sculptures and this passion also leads to a desire to own the best pieces. Furthermore – time sharpens the eye and the feel for it, and so gives greater urgency to the appeal of some works: you aren’t going to sell me!

Circles and lines – two basic forms are interwoven throughout the entire collection, which includes works by Magdalena Jetelová, Jiří Hilmar, Aleš Veselý, František Kyncl, Jiří Kolář, Vladimír Kokoli and other significant figures from Czech art in recent decades. What is more David is linked to many of the exhibited works by personal memories of the artist.

The exhibition does not have and in truth cannot have the ambition to map all the trends in Czech post-war abstract art. It is rather a chamber collection – most private, which however can serve as a document on the theme: what art finds a place in the heart of a professional gallery owner.
