A Pilgrimage through China

On the 100th anniversary of the birth of the artist Zdeněk Sklenář

A famous Czech painter, born just 100 years ago, visited China in 1955. He built lifelong friendships with painters Chi Pai-shi, Li Kche-zhan, Wu Cuo-zhen, Fu Pao-she and poet Ai Ch'ing. After his return from China Sklenář decorated the book "Monkey King", a Czech translation of Wu Cheng'en's novel Journey to the West and became a symbol of the book's new look. After fifty years, Sklenář's illustrations were brought alive in an animated and interactive film created by Ondřej Doležal and pixl-e studio, prepared for the EXPO 2010 World Exhibition in Shanghai. Visitors of Smetana's Creative Litomyšl will have an extraordinary opportunity to see the film together with the drawings to a mythical book of ancient Chinese poetry, Songs of Ancient China, in the Zdeněk Sklenář Gallery.
