Exhibition concept: Stanislav Kolíbal and Martin Dostál
To class Stanislav Kolíbal as only a sculptor would be a simplification. Not only because his work resonates entirely with the impulses of international Avant-garde, for which sculpture had long ago stopped fulfilling the function of a materialistic canon, but also for his exceptional drawings, which are on the frontier of existential fiction and geometric consistency. Cogitation, accuracy even intensity permeate his work, which during the diversification of evolutionary stages, always resonates with the current state of artistic media and concludes in a classical uniformity of intention and fulfilled aspirations. White Drawings evolved from 1968 until 1976. In these works, from Kolíbal's key period, an articulation of basic themes and expressive questions is reached, which underlines the artwork for several decades. In White Drawings, which utilize geometric lines and curves, Kolíbal opens up an unending and exceptionally imaginative visual game, which touches the basic questions of existence. For some this may be hidden, but for Kolíbal's drawings and his entire work it is of fundamental importance, the artist sidesteps past the formal aspect of geometric abstraction and Minimalism, to which he may can been assigned.White Drawings refer to the theme of time. Consequently affecting events, which constantly encompass and conditions us, and from which there is no escape. Kolíbal is interested in process and the development of events, which can be captured by a mere unit or line. Nevertheless, here he expresses the basic axis of our existence - growth, transformation and eclipse.
